William Bindley Philanthropy

William E. Bindley was born on October 6, 1940 in Terre Haute, Indiana. He graduated from Purdue University in 1962 with a Doctorate of Management degree. In 1968, he established Bindley Western Industries, which is a distributor of pharmaceutical products and a nuclear pharmacy operator, where he served as chairman from 1968 to 2001. Bindley Wesern Industries merged with Cardinal Health in 2001, making it the world’s leading distributor of healthcare products and services. William Bindley served as a member of the Board from 2001 to 2003. In 1992, he also founded the Priority Healthcare Corporation, which is a provider of biopharmaceuticals and chronic disease therapies. He served as its President in 1996 and its CEO from 1994-1997. In 2001, William Bindley founded the Bindley Capital Partner LLC, an Indianapolis-based private equity and investment company. He is also the Vice Chairman of the United States Ski and Snowboard Association.

In 2002, William Bindley donated $52.5 million to Purdue University:

  • $45 million of this grant was used to support endowments for faculty chairs, student scholarships and fellowships, and other educational programs.
  • $7.5 million of the same grant covered half the construction cost of a bioscience research center, now named as the Bindley Bioscience Center. The laboratories for this center are designed for a range of multidisciplinary research projects, and connect the researchers with engineers from Birck Nanotechnology Center.
  • William Bindley gave $1 million to U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team Foundation.
  • Another $500,000 was donated for the establishment of a new business-school building at Purdue University. William Bindley now serves on the Board of the Purdue Research Foundation and the President’s Advisory Council at Purdue.
