Born on the 4th of July in 1946 in Encino, California, Michael Robert Milken is a famous investor who made millions in his financial dealings. He is currently focused on active philanthropic efforts through his established charity organization.

As he battled cancer, Michael Milken realized that he had more to offer by serving other people than by just doing business. As a result, he formed the Milken Family Foundation. A business mogul as well as a philanthropist, Milken also spent his personal wealth in fighting his disease.

Although known for his conglomerate takeover deals, Michael Milken also spends his time and money in support of charities. Although he started doing humanitarian endeavors early in his career, it was not until the mid-90s that he was greatly acknowledged for his work.

In 1995, he donated $5 million to a Jewish secondary academic institution. When he found out about his advanced prostate cancer at 46, despite it going into remission, he wanted to change his life and to make others aware of such a disease. Later on, he developed an organization that helped raise money for research in cancer.

Apart from dedicating much of his life to the foundation, he also wrote a cookbook about healthy living in partnership with Beth Ginsberg.

The Poland born businessman studied at the University of Michigan and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1963.

Apart from his efforts in real estate and other businesses, Sam Zell actively promotes education through philanthropic ventures. In fact, he helped raise funds for the Sam Zell and Robert Lurie Real Estate Center and the Real Estate Department at the University of Pennsylvania. He also assisted in the establishment of the Zell-Lurie Institute at the University of Michigan, to which he has likewise contributed donations. He additionally funded the Zell Center for Risk Research at the Kellogg School of Management in Northwestern University.

Sam Zell’s involvement in education does not stop with endowments, though, as he acts as a member of the University of Michigan’s President’s Advisory Board. At the same time, he is one of the members of the Visitor’s Committee at University of Michigan’s School of Law.

Ranked sixth highest in The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s exclusive roster, The Philanthropy 50: Americans Who Gave the Most in 2008; David G. Booth made one of the largest endowments to an American university in history. Together with his wife Suzanne Deal, he continues to stay true to his commitment to give back to the community that has made a significant impact in his young life.

The 62-year old David Booth co-founded the Santa Monica, California-based international finance firm, Dimensional Fund Advisors. Today, the company oversees 300 diverse accounts and funds that are valued at about $120 billion in assets. Dimensional applies Booth’s directive of “passive investing,” which has served him well in amassing his own fortune.

Aside from Dimensional Fund Advisors, David Booth divides his time functioning as a non-executive director and member of the Risk Committee of Barclays Bank PLC ever since 2007. Prior to establishing his own firm, he served as the managing director of the Global Operations and Technology Division for investment company Morgan Stanley & Co.

Currently, David Booth is a trustee of the University of Chicago Business School, of which he is a Master’s in Business Administration 1971 alumnus. He acknowledges the guidance of several key professors in shaping his own financial philosophy when it comes to efficient market theories. Of those that David Booth feels gratitude for his “intellectual epiphany” and sharpening his business acumen are Frank Reilly, Merton Miller, and the mentor he has considered the greatest force of influence, Eugene Fama.

In 2008, together with his wife, the normally fame-reserved David Booth, pledged a $300 million commitment to the University of Chicago’s Business School. The payment, spread over a period of years, will be partly in cash and in the form of a considerable share of stock in the finance firm’s parent company, Dimensional Holdings. In honor of one of its most prominent alumni, the school decided to change its name to The University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Although the amount has not yet been broken down into specific programs and projects, the fund’s general purpose is to further the school publications and research centers, as well as the faculty’s professional development that includes securing the employment of and retaining the best professors in the academe. There is also the opportunity to use part of the amount to expand its reputation as a regional player through its international campuses already in London and Singapore.

Apart from dealing in corporate mergers and takeovers, private equity mogul Henry Kravis, co-founder of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, also takes time to do his share of social responsibility. Most of his charitable endeavors are focused on education, medical and health services, and social and community development.

Henry Kravis provides the funds of the Henry Kravis Leadership Institute, an organization that sponsors the programs and training for future leaders of Claremont McKenna College, Kravis’s alma mater. Kravis also donated large amount of money for the construction of several facilities in the following academic institutions:

• Eaglebrook School
• Deerfield Academy
• The Loomis Chaffee School

Henry Kravis established the Henry Kravis Prize for Leadership, which recognizes innovation and leadership in nonprofits. Claremont McKenna College awards this prize every year. Past recipients have included Pratham, Dr. Sakena Yacoobi of the Afghan Institute of Learning, and Forum For African Women Educationalists (FAWE). The winner of the Henry Kravis Prize receives $250,000 for the nonprofit organization’s operations.

His other educational pursuits also include the Henry Kravis Internships for Teachers of Color. Last April, he awarded $250,000 to the Forum for African Women Educationalists. The Kenya-based organization strives to promote education to African girls and women located in 33 different countries in Africa.

In the field of medicine, Henry Kravis has contributed significant amounts to the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, where he sits as a member of the board. In 1988, Henry Kravis gave $10 million to the hospital for the creation of a women’s and children’s center meant to provide social, psychological and medical services. Years later, he donated $15 million to the same medical institution for the benefit of Mt. Sinai’s cardiovascular center.

Henry Kravis also has his attention on New York’s poor. With the New York City Investment Fund, a non-profitable organization he founded and comprised of various executives from different industries, Henry Kravis strives to create employment and business opportunities for members of New York’s African-American communities.

Henry Kravis’ wife Marie Josee Kravis is also involved in charitable pursuits. On May 2008, Mr. and Mrs. Kravis participated in a fundraiser that raked in $56 million for the benefit of the Robin Hood Foundation, an organization where Marie Kravis is a board member. Henry Kravis and Marie Kravis were recently featured in a New York Times article highlighting the future of philanthropy.

Henry and Marie Josee Kravis are both patrons of the arts. Henry currently sits as board member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New York City Ballet, while his wife is the museum’s president.

Born in Texas to educators Reuben Leon and Fairess in 1931, Harold Clark Simmons was the middle child in an all boys brood of three. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor’s degree in economics (1951), he attended the same university for his MS Economics degree (1952).

His career began when he worked as an employee for a U.S. government agency prior to working at a bank based in Dallas. Reconsidering his options and plans, he made a personal shift from employee to entrepreneur. Though barely making ends meet and borrowing money, he made his first investment in the form of buying a small drugstore. A decade of hard work and smart moves on the part of Harold Simmons saw the venture grow into a drugstore chain across Texas that has reached a value of over $50 million.

Deciding to try his hand at becoming a financier, he sold his entire first business in 1973 to Eckerd Corporation. A success at this field as well, he currently manages five NYSE-listed corporations. Harold Simmons is the chairman of several prominent directorship boards such as Titanium Metals Corporation (since 2005), specialty chemicals business Kronos Worldwide Incorporated (2003), NL Industries Incorporated (1987) and synthetics company Valhi Incorporated (1961). Listed as the 214th individual on Forbes World’s Richest People in 2007, he rose through the ranks to become the 146th in 2009.

Among his many awards are the 2002 Angel of Freedom Award by Human Rights Initiative, Charles Cameron Sprague Community Service Award, and the Annette G. Strauss Humanitarian Award.

Together with his wife Annette, and through the Harold Simmons Foundation (1988), he became a major benefactor for several diverse groups:

• Dallas Center for the Performing Arts
• Uplift Education
• Dallas Achieves
• YWCA
• Parkland Memorial Hospital
• Text Protects
• Crystal Charity Ball
• Dallas County Dental Society
• Our Children’s House
• Children’s Medical Center Dallas
• Big Thought
• Ronald McDonald House
• Dallas Black Dance Theatre

The most blessed of his recipients is the University of Texas Southwestern. Harold Simmons has been an extremely generous supporter since 1983, when he pledged $8 million pledge for the Harold C. Simmons Arthritis Research Center. Five years after, he contributed $41 million to the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Simmons Biomedical Research building named for his parents. In 2005, a $50 million clinical and research program grant was given, as well as a $500,000 fund for an endowed chair in clinical oncology for the school’s first president Dr. Charles Sprague. Recently, Harold Simmons donated up to $125 million to the Innovations in Medicine Campaign that UT Southwestern started in 2002.

On August 12, 1930, a man who would actively redefine society’s and culture’s borders was born in Budapest, Hungary by the name of George Soros. He and his family migrated in England in 1947. He had to survive by manually working as a restaurant waiter as well as a railroad porter in England.

In the face of all this difficulty, George Soros managed to support himself through his studies at the London School of Economics, where he accomplished his undergraduate degree. He moved to the United States in 1956, where he developed his prowess as a trader and analyst until 1963. A decade after, he established and benefited immensely from what would be one of the first hedge funds in the nation; the Quantum Fund. In 1992, he became famous for “breaking the Bank of England” on Black Wednesday.

Today, the self-made 78-year old has a net worth of $9 billion. George Soros is ranked 29th in Forbes’ World’s Billionaires, mainly because of the Soros Fund Management. His vast fortune is duly matched by his generosity. From 2007-2008 alone, he contributed $474.6 million to non-profit organizations, and gave over $106,000 in political contributions. George Soros also created the Soros Humanitarian Foundation to which he gave $230 million.

Among George Soros’ many projects are the Millennium Promise Initiative which seeks to eliminate extreme African poverty ($50 million), the regional Russian Universities Internet infrastructure creation ($100 million), and putting up a grantmaking foundation in China dedicated to transparency and fostering civil society. In fact, his history of giving began as early as 1979, when he financially aided African American students to go to University of Cape Town in South Africa.

What is perhaps George Soros’ greatest legacy lies, however, in his establishment of the Open Society Institute in 1993. He was particularly influenced by philosopher Karl Popper, author of The Open Society and Its Enemies – an insightful critique on the political system of totalitarianism. As such, he has endeavored to aid the formation of human rights awareness, democratic governance, and concrete reform in the different sectors of society in over 60 countries at present.

George Soros was on the cover of Time Magazine’s September 1, 1997 issue, which featured his causes. For his published work and philanthropic dedication to the promotion of open societies, he has been recognized by prestigious bodies such as Yale University, Oxford University, New School for Social Research, and the University of Bologna’s highest honor, the Laurea Honoris Causa.

George B. Kaiser cemented his reputation as a devout philanthropist the same way he built the Bank of Oklahoma Financial Corporation; with a burning dedication. With a current net worth of $11 billion, he is ranked 43rd on Forbes World’s Richest People in 2009.

Fleeing from Nazi Germany in 1938, his family settled in Oklahoma where they would establish their gas and oil business. George Kaiser then became a prominent alumnus of Harvard University where he earned both undergraduate and master of business administration degrees. In 1969, he was at the helm of his family business, which flourished until it rose to the top ranks in private energy production as Kaiser-Francis Oil.

Today, the self-made billionaire’s financial portfolio covers a diverse range of businesses. George Kaiser owns a controlling $1.9 billion stake in his brainchild, Bank of Oklahoma. A recent investment is his purchase of over $1 billion in gas tankers, which would then be a factor in his 2008 sale of half of Excelerate Energy, the liquefied natural gas company.

He also acquired $412 million worth of gas reserves in Anadarko and Arkoma-based gas reserves from Chesapeake Energy. Other income streams are his private equity holdings, energy trading portfolios, as well as large derivatives from other interests. A well-known distinction is his sentiment that oil and gas industry players should be given a break during difficult time, thus, he suggests voluntarily redirecting tax incentives to education or healthcare projects.

In 2007, the George Kaiser Family Foundation, founded some seven years prior, committed a generous $12.4 million for the improvement of the rapidly deteriorating condition of the Arkansas River. The donation to the River Parks Authority will ensure the building of a dual-trail system for bikers and pedestrians, benches, fixed lighting, and several other much-needed amenities.

The foundation made headlines again with its matching grant of up to $25 million to three distinguished local educational institutions: Tulsa Community College ($4 million), Oklahoma State University ($9 million) and the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa ($12 million).

Another active philanthropic involvement is his foundation’s partnership with the First Five Years Fund. Recognizing early development and learning as an influential and more cost-effective solution in initiating social change, the First Five Years Fund was created as the private sector’s response.

Among his fellow billionaires, George Kaiser is known as one of the world’s most generous and charitable man.

Catherine Reynolds is the first person to develop supplementary structures to educational loans that are backed by private funds. She has also pioneered a reasonably-priced loan origination system among other programs to refine the state of education.

Because of these unheard-of strategies in the student loan industry, Reynolds redeemed the company from bankruptcy and transformed it into an industry leader offering over 200 financial products.

Now with $600 million to her name, Catherine Reynolds has been donating for philanthropic causes. Eventually, Business Week took notice and listed her one of the fifty most generous Americans ever.

Her philanthropic endeavors operate under the Catherine B. Reynolds Foundation. True to form, it wants citizenry to have greater access to education more than anything.

The Catherine B. Reynolds Foundation handed out nine-figure sums to organizations affiliated with culture and the arts, most notably the National Gallery of Art and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. No less than President George W. Bush applauded her for donating $100 million to the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Other beneficiaries of her philanthropy include: Academy of Achievement, America’s Promise, Black Student Fund, Blair House Restoration Fund, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Capital Area Food Bank, Carson Scholars Fund, CharityWorks, Children’s Inn at NIH, Choral Arts Society of Washington, The Dance Theatre of Harlem, DC College Access Program (DC CAP), Fellows for Social Entrepreneurship at Harvard University, Fellows for Social Entrepreneurship at New York University, Flight 77 Scholarship Program, Ford’s Theatre Society, Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Green Door, Hurricane Katrina Scholarship Fund, In2Books, Inova Health System, Kellar Center, Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries, The King Center, Morehouse College, Museum of the Rockies, N Street Village, National Catholic Educational Association, National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, National Geographic Society, National Student Partnerships, National Symphony Orchestra, Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, School Night, Share Our Strength, Supreme Court Historical Society, The Sunlight Foundation, Teach for America, Together for Girls, TOYchallenge, Washington Metropolitan Scholars, Washington Redskins Leadership Council, The Wheelchair Foundation, William J. World Savings is currently the second largest financial institution in the United States.

Founded in 1977, the Bernard Osher Foundation is devoted to five major areas of focus:

Scholarships for Higher Education (Osher Scholars and Fellows Program)

Scholarships for University Reentry Students aged 25 to 50 (Osher Reentry Scholarship Program)

Programs addressing the educational needs of seasoned adults at institutions of higher education (Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes)

Selected integrative medicine programs

Arts and educational programs in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area and the State of Maine

In 2006, the Bernard Osher Foundation spent a total of $723.2 million dollars in support of these and other programs. These initiatives have resulted in the creation of small programs in several institutions in the United States that promote lifelong learning.

Peter Lynch is known for his highly successful stock picks at Fidelity Investments. He got his start at Fidelity after caddying for Fidelity’s president and other notables and went on to manage a fund which averaged a 29.2% annualized return since its inception.

Peter Lynch gives money in several ways. He gives individually, through the Lynch Foundation, Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund, and two charitable trusts. The Lynch Foundation supports religious organizations, education, and cultural/historic organizations.

Lynch prefers to support ideas that he thinks can spread, such as First Night. First Night is an arts and culture celebration on New Year’s Eve, to ring in the New Year. Another example is City Year, a community service program that began in Boston and has since spread to cities around the country.
