John Ilhan was known as the founder of one of Australia’s largest privately held mobile phone companies. Born as Mustafa Ilhan in 1965 in Yozgat, central Turkey, John Ilhan started off as an average person belonging to one of working class communities in Melbourne, Australia (he and his family moved to the country when he was 5 yrs old). John Ilhan established his first mobile phone store, “Mobileworld” at Brunswick during the early 1990s. Before he reached 40, the successful Turkish-Australian entrepreneur managed to amass a tremendous amount of wealth that exceeded $300 million. As a result, he was formerly ranked by the BRW magazine as the “Richest Young Person in Australia.”

Having garnered much wealth at a very young age, John Ilhan decided to contribute a large percentage of his earnings to charity. Before he died at the age of 42 in October 23, 2007, John Ilhan was also known as one of the country’s most generous philanthropists. He has provided regular donations to a wide range of charitable organizations.

In order to maximize his contribution to charity, he created the Ilhan Food Allergy Foundation. The foundation was primarily established using John Ilhan’s $1 million donation. John Ilhan was prompted to initiate the non-profit organization right after he learned of his daughter’s severe allergy to peanuts.

Henry Ford, the founder of Ford Motor, was among the first tycoons to develop assembly line manufacturing to automobile production. He was considered a pioneer in industrial production.

Together with Edsel Ford, Henry Ford’s son, they formed the Ford Foundation in 1936. Basically, the private organization, which is headquartered in New York City, intends to improve the wellbeing of society. It makes grants through its main office in New York and through its other offices across the globe. Its first international office, which was developed in 1952, is located in New Delhi, India.

Fords Foundation’s first donation was in support of the enhancement of the broadcasting system in 1951. Later on, it contributed $1 million to the Children’s Television Workshop in the creation and launching of Sesame Street.

In the fiscal year of 2007, Ford’s charity reported assets of $13.7 billion and made official its $530 million in donations for projects that center on strengthening democratic principles, community and economic advancement, media, human rights, education and arts and culture.

The Ford Foundation is the third biggest charitable organization in the United States. It expanded to serve causes across the country and throughout the world in 1950 and eventually sold all of the Ford Motor Company shares. Today, the foundation continues to focus on the goals first set by Henry Ford.

Born on the 4th of July in 1946 in Encino, California, Michael Robert Milken is a famous investor who made millions in his financial dealings. He is currently focused on active philanthropic efforts through his established charity organization.

As he battled cancer, Michael Milken realized that he had more to offer by serving other people than by just doing business. As a result, he formed the Milken Family Foundation. A business mogul as well as a philanthropist, Milken also spent his personal wealth in fighting his disease.

Although known for his conglomerate takeover deals, Michael Milken also spends his time and money in support of charities. Although he started doing humanitarian endeavors early in his career, it was not until the mid-90s that he was greatly acknowledged for his work.

In 1995, he donated $5 million to a Jewish secondary academic institution. When he found out about his advanced prostate cancer at 46, despite it going into remission, he wanted to change his life and to make others aware of such a disease. Later on, he developed an organization that helped raise money for research in cancer.

Apart from dedicating much of his life to the foundation, he also wrote a cookbook about healthy living in partnership with Beth Ginsberg.

He has also appeared as himself in a Hollywood romantic comedy starring Jack Black and Gwyneth Paltrow, Shallow Hal.

As an active philanthropist, Tony Robbins formed his own charity called the Anthony Robbins Foundation. It started out as a campaign to give away bags of groceries anonymously to poverty stricken homes every year at Thanksgiving Day. Through the years, it has improved and now serves over 500,000 individuals each year all over the world. His philanthropic organization performs such deeds particularly during the holidays like Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year. What Tony Robbins’ foundation also does is inspire, educate and train those who are deprived financially and emotionally in the society.

Ranked sixth highest in The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s exclusive roster, The Philanthropy 50: Americans Who Gave the Most in 2008; David G. Booth made one of the largest endowments to an American university in history. Together with his wife Suzanne Deal, he continues to stay true to his commitment to give back to the community that has made a significant impact in his young life.

The 62-year old David Booth co-founded the Santa Monica, California-based international finance firm, Dimensional Fund Advisors. Today, the company oversees 300 diverse accounts and funds that are valued at about $120 billion in assets. Dimensional applies Booth’s directive of “passive investing,” which has served him well in amassing his own fortune.

Aside from Dimensional Fund Advisors, David Booth divides his time functioning as a non-executive director and member of the Risk Committee of Barclays Bank PLC ever since 2007. Prior to establishing his own firm, he served as the managing director of the Global Operations and Technology Division for investment company Morgan Stanley & Co.

Currently, David Booth is a trustee of the University of Chicago Business School, of which he is a Master’s in Business Administration 1971 alumnus. He acknowledges the guidance of several key professors in shaping his own financial philosophy when it comes to efficient market theories. Of those that David Booth feels gratitude for his “intellectual epiphany” and sharpening his business acumen are Frank Reilly, Merton Miller, and the mentor he has considered the greatest force of influence, Eugene Fama.

In 2008, together with his wife, the normally fame-reserved David Booth, pledged a $300 million commitment to the University of Chicago’s Business School. The payment, spread over a period of years, will be partly in cash and in the form of a considerable share of stock in the finance firm’s parent company, Dimensional Holdings. In honor of one of its most prominent alumni, the school decided to change its name to The University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Although the amount has not yet been broken down into specific programs and projects, the fund’s general purpose is to further the school publications and research centers, as well as the faculty’s professional development that includes securing the employment of and retaining the best professors in the academe. There is also the opportunity to use part of the amount to expand its reputation as a regional player through its international campuses already in London and Singapore.

Sam Walton was born in Kingfisher, Oklahoma in the year 1918. He passed away in 1992, and in his passing, left the distinction of having accumulated the largest American family fortune.

In his autobiography, Made in America: My Story, Sam Walton’s own ideals are clearly shown to have shaped the culture of giving across all his businesses and relations.
In 1987, upon his wife Helen’s encouragement, he put in $1,000 for his family foundation. Upon his death, he bequeathed a trust fund valued at $172 million exclusively for this institution. Wal-Mart Foundations and The Walton Family Foundation are the pioneer organizations, while there are also quite a number of philanthropic commitments that his family has established over the years.

• Sam Walton and his entire family have been the consistent guardians of advocacies for education. One recipient is the Knowledge for Power Program, geared toward public education and exploring financing alternatives for the sector.
• The Walton Family Foundation provides support through PRIs/loans, scholarships to deserving individuals, program and curriculum development, as well as technical assistance.
• Among the highest aid Sam Walton and his empire provided are:
• $3,000,000 – Blue Ridge School in Dyke, Virginia
• $1,177,709 – Center for Education Reform, Washington DC
• $1,270,304 – the International Community Foundation San Diego, California
• $500,000 – National Center for Educational Accountability, Austin, Texas
• $421,500 – Minnesota Association of Charter Schools
• A report by The National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy highlighted how the financial donations of the Waltons have indeed become greater than their monetary value as they continue to change the lives of thousands. BusinessWeek named the Walton Family as one of The 50 Top American Givers in 2008.
