Anthony “Tony” Robbins, born on February 29th 1960 in California, is known in America as a self help author and speaker who coaches world leaders, business individuals and even sports professionals. He is also known for holding lively motivational seminars. Internationally, he is known for appearing in various infomercials, talk shows, TV interviews and radio programs. He has also appeared as himself in a Hollywood romantic comedy starring Jack Black and Gwyneth Paltrow, Shallow Hal.

As an active philanthropist, Tony Robbins formed his own charity called the Anthony Robbins Foundation. It started out as a campaign to give away bags of groceries anonymously to poverty stricken homes every year at Thanksgiving Day. Through the years, it has improved and now serves over 500,000 individuals each year all over the world. His philanthropic organization performs such deeds particularly during the holidays like Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year. What Tony Robbins’ foundation also does is inspire, educate and train those who are deprived financially and emotionally in the society.

Writing inspirational books is his other way of helping other people. In fact, he has created book and audio programs titled Awaken the Giant Within, which motivates readers and listeners in controlling their physical, financial and emotional health; and Unlimited Power, which aims to make people trust in themselves in overcoming fears.

Joanna “Jo” Rowling, more commonly know by her penname J.K. Rowling, is the creator and author of the famous Harry Potter series. Her famous series has sold more than 400 million copies worldwide and has gained attention even before it was made into a movie. Within five years, the British author became a multi-millionaire eventually after writing the Potters series and getting recognition for it.

J.K. Rowling was born on July 30, 1965, in Gloucestershire, England. She attended the University of Exeter and received her BA in French and Classics upon graduating. After a year of studying in Paris, Rowling moved to London to work at the Amnesty International as a secretary and researcher.

Rowling was named the first person to become a billionaire by writing books, according to the Forbes Magazine. She was also named the 2nd richest female entertainer behind Oprah Winfrey.

In November 2002, J.K. Rowling established the Volant Charitable Trust, an organization aimed at fighting poverty social inequality. According to their website, they have two broad areas of funding:

• Research into the causes and treatment of Multiple Sclerosis. The Trust is currently committed to funding several long-term research projects of this type and is not considering further applications for funding in this area at the present time.

• Charities and projects, whether community-based or on a national level, at home or abroad, that tackle social deprivation, with a focus on women’s and children’s issues.

Rowling is also president of the One Parent Families, a non-profit group that supports lone parent families. In September 2008, she gave a whopping 1 million in pounds to the Labour Party of UK. She is a fundraiser of Comic Relief, an anti-poverty non-partisan organization that prevents famine and poverty in developing countries.

Before Bill Gates, the world’s most generous philanthropist had been Walter H. Annenberg. At $1.4 billion, the value of his foundation had been unheard of among philanthropic heavyweights in the 1990s.

Mr. Annenberg edited the Philadelphia Inquirer, which his family owned. He salvaged his family’s bankrupt publications firm, Triangle, with astounding success. Through this company, he published Seventeen magazine in 1942, then acquired several American radio and television stations in the 50s. In 1953, he made a fortune with TV Guide, the weekly publication with the world’s largest circulation.

Walter Annenberg philanthropic efforts have amounted to $3.7 billion in cash.

The Annenberg Foundation has spent over $2.8 billion for the endowment of over 5,000 grants.

In 1993, Walter Annenberg donated $500 million to his prep school, Peddie, Harvard University, the University of Southern California, and the University of Pennsylvania. The same year, he launched the Annenberg Challenge, a foundation for America’s public education.

Walter Annenberg’s donation to the United Negro College Fund, totaling $50 million, is the highest ever given to black colleges. He also donated a total of $228 million to the University of Southern California, which led to the creation of the Annenberg School for Communication.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting received $150 million from Walter Annenberg. He also gave another $60 million to the same broadcasting outfit to help K-12 pupils in science and math.

An avid supporter of the arts, Walter Annenberg gave $15 million to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. He also donated his collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist artworks, then valued at $1 billion, to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1991.

Walter H. Annenberg philanthropic activities extended to the United Kingdom. He donated money to The National Gallery and the British Museum, as well as sponsored a teaching post at Eton.
