A financier and billionaire philanthropist, Sanford I. Weill was born on March 16, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Cornell University in 1955. In 1998, he created Citigroup, Inc., the world’s largest financial services corporation, where he became the CEO until 2003 and remained as its Chairman until 2006. Before the establishment of Citigroup, he was the Chairman and CEO of several companies, including American Express, Commercial Credit, Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company, and Travelers Insurance Company. Now residing in Connecticut, and with a net worth of $1.8 billion, Sanford I. Weill ranks 271 in the 2007 Forbes List of Richest Americans.
- As Chairman of Carnegie Hall, Sanford Weill raised $60 million for the restoration of the establishment’s facilities.
- Sanford Weill donated to the medical school of Cornell University, which was then named as the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical College and Graduate School of Medical Sciences in April 1998. As an Emeritus Trustee of Cornell University and the Chairman of the Board of Overseers of the medical college, he and his wife donated $250 million to Cornell.
- Sanford Weill founded the National Academy Foundation, a joint venture of business leaders and educators aimed to help and prepare students for their professional careers. It caters to more than 50,000 students in more than 500 academies across the country through small learning communities.
- Sanford Weill donated $5 million to the University of Michigan for the construction of the Joan and Sanford Weill Hall. He also endowed $3 million for the position of the dean of the school.
- Sanford Weill also worked for the Working Group on Child Care, spearheaded by Robert Rubin, former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury.
