Considered as one of the wealthiest people in America for owning the (Los Angeles and Chicago) Tribune Corporation, Sam Zell is real estate entrepreneur born in Chicago, Illinois in September 1941. He has a net worth of $6 billion as of 2008. He is also the private investment firm Equity Group Investments’ founding partner and chairman. The Poland born businessman studied at the University of Michigan and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1963.
Apart from his efforts in real estate and other businesses, Sam Zell actively promotes education through philanthropic ventures. In fact, he helped raise funds for the Sam Zell and Robert Lurie Real Estate Center and the Real Estate Department at the University of Pennsylvania. He also assisted in the establishment of the Zell-Lurie Institute at the University of Michigan, to which he has likewise contributed donations. He additionally funded the Zell Center for Risk Research at the Kellogg School of Management in Northwestern University.
Sam Zell’s involvement in education does not stop with endowments, though, as he acts as a member of the University of Michigan’s President’s Advisory Board. At the same time, he is one of the members of the Visitor’s Committee at University of Michigan’s School of Law.
