John Mackey Philanthropy
Prominent American businessman John Mackey currently serves as the chief executive officer of Whole Foods Market, a company he cofounded during the 1980s. As a businessman, he is a strong advocate of free market economics. Aside from this, he is also one of the most influential supporters of the organic food movement.
A native of Houston, Texas, John Mackey was born in 1953 to Margaret and Bill Mackey. He is a former philosophy and religion student at the University of Texas, where he obtained his undergraduate degree in the 1970s.
In 2003, John Mackey was hailed as the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year. Aside from being an award winning entrepreneur, John Mackey is also the founder of the Whole Planet Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to creating economic partnerships with various communities in developing countries.
The Whole Planet Foundation aims to promote the creativity of every person they work with in order to achieve prosperous economies. The foundation aims to achieve this by providing innovative assistance such as direct microcredit loans and other tangible kinds of support to a range of community partnership projects.
Aside from promoting a prosperous economy, John Mackey also advocates human treatment for animals. In fact, Whole Foods is the first chain of groceries in the country to set specific standards regarding humane animal treatment.
