Eli Broad is the developer who created two Fortune 500 companies, SunAmerica and KB Homes (formerly Kaufman Broad Homes). He currently lives in Los Angeles, and is active in projects to revitalize its downtown.
- In 1999, the Broads founded The Broad Education Foundation and has committed over $500 million to support new ideas and innovative leadership in the urban school system. One of the flagship initiatives, the Broad Prize for Urban Education, awards $1 million to stellar urban school districts.
- Since 1984, the Broad Art Foundation has operated as an art lending library, sharing the Broad Art Collection with over 400 museums and university galleries internationally. In the realm of art philanthropy, the Broads have given a gift earmarked to fund the building of the Broad Art Museum.
- Broad also endowed his alma mater, Michigan State University with the Eli Broad College of Business. Other educational institutions benefiting from the Broads’ generosity include MIT and Harvard, where a $100 million donation resulted in the creation of the Broad Institute.
