Alfred Ford

Alfred Brush Ford was born in 1950 to one of the wealthiest families in America, and is the great grandson of Henry Ford, the founder of the Ford Motor Company and father of modern assembly line.

In 1972, he graduated from Tulane University in Louisiana, obtaining a degree in art history. He moved to the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming where he spent the entire time skiing along the slopes. It was in this period that a close friend of Ford back in college, who founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), taught him about Hinduism. Soon after, started transforming his lifestyle and in 1975, he finally joined the religious organization. He is married to Dr. Sharmila Bhattacharya, and they have two children.

Alfred Ford has directed his investments in an Internet software company and is not involved in the management of the Ford car company.

Many of Alfred Ford’s philanthropic activities have involved the establishment of Hindu temples and centers:

  • Alfred Ford donated $500,000 for the construction of a Krishna museum Bhaktivedanta Cultural Center in Detroit, Michigan.
  • The first Hindu temple and learning center in Honolulu, Hawaii, was established with Alfred Ford’s $600,000 donation.
  • Alfred Ford gave $10.2 million for the establishment of the Temple of the Vedic Planetarium, a house of worship built in Mayapur, India.
  • Alfred Ford also co-founded The Friends of the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies Inc. (FOCHS) with an aim to enable United States residents to support the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies Inc. The foundation’s campaigns seek the partnership of philanthropic persons and organizations in areas of infrastructures, scholarships, and other academic programs.
  • Alfred Ford financed the establishment of a Vedic Center in Moscow, which includes a temple, Yoga center, a museum of ancient Indian religious culture, a vegetarian café, and a theater.
